Station 247: Distorting Reality

Can you tell if you’re dreaming?

Sometimes, yeah.

Because I can’t.

Well, that’s most people, isn’t it? I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

But, like, I often think my dreams really happened, even after I’ve woken up and gone about my day.

Oh? Do tell me more.

I mean, have you ever gone about doing something, overhear one of your mates talking about what they did over the holiday a few weeks back and then think: Huh, that time I thought we went for a round at the pub was just a dream, huh?

Can’t say I have.

It doesn’t happen often, but often enough that you kind of have to think and wonder, you know?

If you thought it was real, how do you realise it was a dream?

Well, if such a circumstance comes up that makes you recall that memory, that’s when you realise that memory was false.

Interesting.

Guessing you can’t say you’ve had the same experience?

No, I can’t. The only oddball experiences I can speak of are being able to control my dreams.

Yeah, you told me this a while back. How does that work?

You just realise whatever’s going on can’t be right and then start to mess with it.

See, the trouble I have with that is, no matter how whacky everything is around me during my dreams, it’s believable to me in the moment.

There are some flags you can watch out for.

But I don’t realise that until I think about it after I’ve woken up.

I do notice, though, when I dream, and I’m supposed to feel something or taste something, it’s always muted. Like if I’m eating something and someone is waiting for me to tell them how it tastes, it will taste bland. If someone biffs me over the head, I don’t really feel it.

Do you dream in color?

Yeah.

Because I don’t.

Really? Interesting.

Think that has something to do with it?

I don’t see how it would. But that’s beyond my understanding.
