After taking a break to focus on other projects and stories, the writing for Of A Flower will resume. Here is the story thus far:
‘Of A Flower’ is a fantasy fiction that explores the walled gardens humans create for themselves and the limits of our own consciousness. Elisabeth, a young florist, lives in a world full of spirits and city states. Her refusal to leave her father’s lodge in the wilderness has driven some of the townspeople to become suspicious of her, increasingly threatening her to stay in the town or leave it.
One day, Elisabeth meets a spirit girl at her cottage and discovers the girl isn’t normal. She remembers the words of the odd visitor and feels uneasy about hosting the spirit. When she wakes in the morning, finding the spirit gone, she rejects the reality she found herself in and tries to return to normal.
Witnessing the town’s angst towards spirits at the food market, something she had been ignorant to before, Elisabeth tries to convince herself these troubles are not her problem, even going as far as blaming her anxiety on how the unrest makes the town look. Her excuse doesn’t make her feel better, and one of her friends notices how out-of-character it was for a recluse like her to care about the town’s image.
Alice, the spirit girl, returns, wanting to stay at the cottage, and in witnessing the town’s angst, Elisabath refuses to let her do so freely, afraid it would get her into trouble. Despite her refusal, Alice sticks around, leading to an unintended confrontation. Not wanting to come across as insensitive, Elisabeth does eventually come to terms with the spirit girl to let her stay a little bit longer.
With an established agreement, Elisabeth restores some sort of normalcy in her life, able to interact naturally with her friends once more. Yet, she still has her doubts, and to those who knew her well, her anxiety is clearly visible, even if the reason is not.
After a near accident on her tram ride to town, an investigator pays an unexpected visit to Elisabeth’s shop on the report she was selling magical flowers. Fortunately, the investigator is level-headed and fair, taking his time and eventually concludes the report must be bogus. That same day, Elisabeth comes across an old classmate, Sophia, who returned to town with her husband.
Paying a visit to her flower shop at a later date, Elisa invites Sophia to her cottage, confident now that Alice was competent at hiding. However, a change in plans and a misunderstanding leads Sophia to discover the spirit girl. Fortunately enough, she is not frightened by the spirits, herself a country girl, but Alice is a secret no more, and Elisabeth fears it is only a matter of time before word gets out.
