Station 163: Hero

So you want to become a hero
You better come with a plan
For not every hero gets a smile
Not every hero lasts a while

They will love you
They will worship you
But in that, there is a sacrifice
One no reward can suffice

Every time you walk up to the window
They will be ready, exposed or hidden
Clamoring for the chance to talk to you
Or waiting to see what the hero will do

Don’t let the fame fool you
Not all of them will like you
Give them a chance to pounce, they will
Then send you tumbling down the hill

It starts with a spark, a sparrow
An action they don’t understand
Then they’ll drag you out to the open
Make you their strawman

Prepare to be scrutinized
Your past mistakes, unveiled
There is no privacy in this life
No chance for a fair fight

They will get others to follow
They care not about the human
They’ll elevate your mistakes, and hide their own
Make sure there’s no room to atone

But why you?
What do they get from attacking you?
Because a hero is an easy target, an open library
Find something you believe in, and offer the contrary

Once a hero
Now you’re a villain
This has become their race
Because as a hero falls, they rise in their place

You can admit it
Or you can fight it
Whichever you choose will determine your destiny
Whichever you choose will shape your legacy

If you want to be a hero
You better be driven
Keep to your word, your principles
And if they mean well, you will outlast their troubles
